Troy Hirst Marlborough, NZ Obituary - Cause of Death Surfing

It is with a heavy heart that this tribute is written to mark the passing of Troy Hirst, one of New Zealand’s most nuggety surfers, who dominated the early 1990s and beyond. His loss has left the surfing community, friends, and family devastated, with many reflecting on a life filled with passion, laughter, and unforgettable waves.

Troy was the son of dear friends Paula and Richard and brother to Brodie. Those closest to him remember him not only as a gifted surfer but as a deeply loved son, brother, and friend whose presence brought energy and warmth wherever he went.

In 1990, I moved to Muriwai across the road from the Hirst family, living in a single-room bach producing Kiwi Surf Magazine. Troy, then a young teenage grom, gravitated naturally to my place and quickly became part of my daily life. After school, he would come over—often with apple crumble from his mum—sharing moments of laughter, friendship, and simple joy. After pulling milk bottle cones, we would sit, laugh, and eat apple crumble and ice cream before he would sneak back home. His parents likely knew, but nothing was ever said.

Troy was fiercely focused on becoming one of New Zealand’s best surfers, earning early sponsorships from Nick Tansley (Razor Surfboards), Jason Falconridge (O’Neill Wetsuits), Matthew Probert (Eversion Clothing), and others. His surfing spoke for itself—deep barrels, powerful rail turns, and explosive lip hits that made him a reliable standout for magazine photography.

All of his iconic shots were captured on Fuji Velvia 50 ASA film in a pre-digital era. These images and memories remain treasured deeply.

Though he had an edge at times, it is what made him competitive and great. I watched him grow into an incredible human being and will miss him dearly. I know he is now with Derm, sharing waves into eternity.

My heartfelt condolences go to Troy’s family, Juni, Westen, and Mikayla.

Troy Hirst will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always cherished.
